French Guitar Hero

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Is there one? French Film Hero? – No problem. Container carloads o’ Actors or Directors. French Fashion Hero? Again – at least five pop to mind. But French Guitar Hero? You’re drawing a blank, dear reader, are you not? Unless you’re a guitarist, or “into” acoustic Guitar music. Then your immediate response would be : “Pierre Bensusan.” So, if you’re just hearing that name for the first time – read on!
What makes Pierre Bensusan not only a French Guitar hero, but an International one abercrombie and fitch , is his ability to make the guitar sound like an entire orchestra. Ok – at least an entire band. Normally a guitar is either a rhythmn or a lead instrument. Pierre’s style(his own) accomplishes both at the same time. If you close your eyes at one of his performances, you will swear there are(at least) two guitars playing
Equally amazing is that Pierre is self taught.(what the French call “autodidacte.”) He employs a well know “open” tuning(ie different from the standard “this-is-how-you-tune-your-guitar” one) called DADGAD. Named after the pitch to which the strings are tuned. This tuning has the advantage of letting the strings reasonate(ring) more than the standard tuning, and generally requires less involvement of the left hand.(ie –ya don’t need as many fingers) Pierre is known as “The King of Dadgad”for his popularization of the “DADGAD” tuning.
Pierre was born in Algeria, and began his musical career with the piano at age seven. By eleven, he’d switched to the guitar, and that’s where he’s been ever since. (Although he can still scorch the ivories when he’s in the mood.)
I first became aware of Pierre(much too late, for a guitarist. Shame on me!) when he performed in San Francisco on the “International Guitar Night” tour. Obviously blown away by the musical experience vibram five fingers shoes , and, as a film-maker interested in French subjects – it was ordained that my cameras and I would visit Pierre that Summer.
And, verily, it came to pass. The occasion was one of the Master Class” workshops that Pierre offers to a small group of students each Summer, who live in a self-contained section of Pierre’s house in a small village outside of Paris. They have set daily hours of instruction with Pierre, the rest of the time is theirs, to practice, and explore. Of course, Pierre does’nt do this for free. But it is a mark of his generousity of spirit that he’s willing to do it at all. And, especially in his own home. Clearly, his willingness and desire to pass on what he’s learned, is equal to his indeniable musical talent.
No amount of words, regardless of the quality of the author, could hope to begin to do justice to the feeling that Pierre’s music generates. But, as a guitarist, what lifts Pierre head and shoulders above his talented acoustic guitar “brothers”,is his ability to transform me from an interested and attentive fellow player ralph lauren outlet , into an entrhralled, amazed listener. My jaw squarely on the floor. My heart surging with the ebb and flow of Pierre’s musical sea. —————————————————— Christopher Strong is the Creator/Director/Host of the Multi-Media Lifestyle/Adventure series – “Bicycle Gourmet’s Treasure of France”, and the author of “Gliding to the Bonheur.” His behind the scenes story of that filming.

How To Set Drum Up To Improve Speed

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Setting up the drum can be a very rewarding experience or can be very frustrating for somebody who is having troubles reaching certain drums or is uncomfortable. Allow me to shed some light on the subject and share with you some tools of the trade. Lets begin by starting on the foundation of the drum set and working our way up.
Pedals / Snare
Examine the pedals and make sure they are at the right distance they need to be so your legs are comfortable. Even if you have to move the snare out of the way for a moment to figure it out. Even though I’m a tall guy and play three pedals, my legs would rub against the snare to much with a 14″ snare. I’ve downgraded to a 13″inch drum which was traded for with my standard 14″inch tin can. I got a really good deal on it as the new snare is a custom maple piccolo. Only have to cough up maybe $50 dollars.
Now I could have kept the other snare but I prefer an even smaller secondary snare drum that can fit on the opposite side of the hi-hat. You may not have to get a smaller snare drum but its at least good to be aware of some of the things that could be hindering your groove.
Drum Throne
Go ahead an take a seat but try to adjust the seat high enough to where your thigh is pointing down just a little so you gain leverage on your pedals. Too much and you’ll feel like your reaching for your pedals and slow your speed down. This is very critical that your seat is at the proper height. Now while your seated lets check out the snare drum.
Double check that the snare is firmly attached to it’s stand and position it pointing slightly at you but high enough where you can still get rim shots. Too high and that rim may bite your knuckle when you reach for a tom. Setting up the snare can also take some time but you’ve about got your foundation all squared off. The next thing we’re going to look at is the hi-hat. It should be above your snare about 5-6 inches give or take. Making it easy to reach and play cross over or with both hands.
Toms
Most toms I’ve seen on other drum sets are position way too flat or way too slanted. Rule of thumb should be you should be able to do a double stroke with the first stroke hitting the tom and second reaching the snare called a sweep stroke. If its angled wrong it won’t allow that to be an easy task. Another thing to keep in mind is if you take a ruler and try to position each center drum that far or close apart you’ll have a much easier time jogging around the set.
It doesn’t have to be rubbing shell to shell but don’t put them far apart where it makes a sweep stroke hard to do. The floor tom should also angle towards you and the snare, plus about the same height. I know it can be a lot to absorb all at once after changing your set around but playing the set where it’s most effective is the best way period! It may take a little time even for you more experienced players to get used to changing it up some, but in the end it will be well worth it.
Have you ever wanted to play like those all jazz cats playing faster the heavy metal rockers? Well, the truth is out there on how to set drum up like an old 80 year old man.

Introducing your child to music

MUSIC TO YOUR LITTLE ONE’S EARS
Singing is good for you and your child
Do you sing songs with your child? Sadly it seems more and more children are missing out on the benefits of singing at home with their parents and carers.
Music is not only enjoyable, extensive research shows that exposing young children to music and singing stimulates their intelligence and emotional development.
Young children love music; and songs not only soothe them or make them laugh, they are also a fun way to learn. Playing songs and encouraging your child to sing along can develop their vocabulary abercrombie , increase their confidence and give them a great head start when they begin full-time education. Recent research by Youth Music, the UK’s largest children’s music charity, shows that enjoying music together and singing songs can help to develop communication, concentration and social skills in under 5s.
Joining in with songs helps build a child’s self-expression, creativity and confidence. Picking up the basics of rhythm, tempo and pitch will help to develop their musicality too.
Tune in to your toddler with these tips
• Introduce your child to a wide variety of songs to build their knowledge of words. Let them listen to all kinds of songs and see what they like best. Don’t just restrict them to nursery rhymes, try folk and pop, but make sure the words are appropriate. • Teach your child short, but fun songs – getting them to learn some simple, repetitive lyrics will develop their listening and concentration skills. • Use songs to help calm your baby or get your toddler to relax for naptime. • If your chid is sleepy in the morning play a cheery song to make them want to get moving. • Children love routine and making songs part of routines makes activities fun. Songs are a great way to help children prepare for transitions from one activity to another, such as tidying up and putting their things away. • Sing together while doing chores or driving somewhere in the car. It’s a good way to build your child’s self esteem especially if you let them choose their favourite songs. • Remember to praise your child after you have both been singing and this will help boost their confidence. • Why not learn songs together and have a family sing-a-long?
